LAA Board Approves Change in Philosophy for most Middle Schol Sports (Grades 6-8)
Beginning with the 2010 Fall Soccer program, the LAA will allow TEAMS to be entered in LAA sports at the middle school level only. This approach will be called the middle school OPEN division. This will include Soccer, Basketball, Softball and Baseball.
For the first time parent coaches will be able to register a team. Coaches will then be able to coach the same student athletes from year to year. By doing this we hope to increase the quality of sports skills of our students and help build lasting relationships with fellow team mates and coaches.
In addition, the LAA is in discussions with several outside organizations who are considering working on cooperative programs. The LAA plans to try some pilot programs that will benefit Lindbergh students.
Each sport that is offered by the LAA has a certain minimum number of team members necessary to play. For example, the number of players needed for volleyball is different from the number of players needed to play baseball.
In order to allow every Lindbergh student the opportunity to play, TEAMS that register will be allowed approximately 75% of the team to register as a team. The remaining team spots will then be filled by individuals who register by themselves. For example, if the number of players needed to play softball is 12 players, the coach would have the ability to register 9 players on their team. The remaining 3 players would be assigned to the team by the LAA and come from players who registered individually. The LAA philosophy of all team members playing an equal amount of time will remain as a basic principle of the LAA.
The LAA Rules and Policy booklet will be revised to further explain the new LAA middle school OPEN Division. We welcome any suggestions from our Lindbergh parents concerning this new approach.
